Why Mental Health Disorders & Addiction Co-Occur
Up until fairly recently addictive disorders and mental illnesses were treated in two separate facilities. It was soon discovered how closely interlinked both disorders are, and dual diagnosis treatment centers began opening their doors. At Princeton Detox & Recovery Center we understand the importance of treating all existing issues simultaneously. First of all, getting sober is important for an accurate mental health diagnosis. It is difficult to tell exactly what’s going on when a person has been abusing a chemical substance, seeing as the symptoms associated with addiction and withdrawal can mimic the symptoms of mental illness. And it is important to treat mental health disorders to prevent a relapse back into addictive behavior.
Why do mental health disorders and addiction so commonly co-occur? An article published by the National Institute on Drug Abuse states three main reasons.
Reasons Mental Health Disorders & Addiction are Correlated:
- There are many common risk factors when it comes to the development of mental illness and addiction –Â These risk factors are genetic predisposition, high stress levels, environmental factors and unresolved trauma. The areas of the brain affected by mental illness are also the same areas of the brain affected by addiction. When one or several of these risk factors is present both disorders are more likely to develop.
- Some chemical substances lead to the development of mental health concerns –Â When the brain is exposed to a chemical substance over and over again, the actual chemistry of the brain begins to change. For example, a person who has been drinking alcohol daily for five or more years is liable to develop a depressive disorder seeing as alcohol is a depressant. Along the same vein, a person who has been abusing a stimulant drug like cocaine or methamphetamine is liable to develop an anxiety disorder.
- Many people who struggle with an undiagnosed or untreated mental illness turn to drugs and/or alcohol as a way of coping –Â This is called self-medication. While chemical substances might temporarily relieve symptoms associated with mental illness, they will only exacerbate these symptoms and make them worse in the long run.
According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, roughly 9.2 million American adults struggled with a dual diagnosis disorder in 2018. Unfortunately, the majority of people who struggle with co-occurring disorders fail to seek the integrated care they need. Our Dual Diagnosis Services
At Princeton Detox & Recovery Center we offer several addiction treatment services geared towards helping those suffering from a dual diagnosis disorder. While we are equipped to help treat people struggling with mental health concerns like anxiety, depression, or unresolved trauma/PTSD, if you or your loved one has been suffering from a more severe mental illness like schizophrenia, we are happy to point you in the direction of a detox center more equipped to help.
The Services We Provide Include:
- Addiction & Psychiatric Assessments – Upon admission to our detox program each client undergoes an in-depth medical assessment. Vitals are checked and a series of questions are asked which helps our clinical team determine which detox methods are going to be the most beneficial to each unique case. Once the system has cleared of drugs and alcohol, and once the symptoms of acute withdrawal have predominantly subsided, a psychiatric professional conducts a personalized and in-depth assessment. If a client is found to have an underlying mental illness, their case manager works to find a subsequent level of care equipped to treat mental health concerns in addition to addiction.
- Individual, Group & Family Therapy – Therapy is an important part of addiction recovery and mental health recovery. At Princeton Detox & Recovery Center we offer individual, group and family therapy sessions. Depending on our caseload we offer one or more on-on-one therapy sessions which allow clients to dive deeper into personal challenges and treatment goals. Group therapy sessions take place at least twice a day and focus on a range of recovery-oriented topics. Family therapy sessions are also available, allowing the loved ones of our clients the chance to heal.

- Relapse Prevention – Relapse prevention training is an important part of the dual diagnosis treatment process. A person can relapse and begin struggling with the symptoms of their mental illness just as they can return to drinking or drug use. Our relapse prevention training services focus on teaching clients how to maintain mental, emotional and physical health while working through any potential relapse triggers.
- Case Management Services – Upon admission to our treatment program each individual client is assigned a case manager. The case manager plays the role of client advocate while working directly with the clinical and psychiatric team to develop a personalized treatment and aftercare plan. Case managers also serve as the main point of contact between the clinical team and the loved ones of each client.
- Aftercare Planning – Following detox our case managers help clients make the transition from medical detox into a dual diagnosis appropriate treatment program. Guardian Recovery Network residential inpatient programs are capable of taking dual diagnosis clients, however, if a client opts to go to a center outside of our network our case managers help make the transition as easy as possible.
