Packing for Detox
What Should I Bring?
Once you make the decision to reach out for help, the next step is preparing yourself for the road ahead. While medical detox is an important first step on the road to recovery, many people who decide to attend detox will immediately transition into a higher level of care — usually inpatient treatment. If you are planning on transitioning from our detox program into residential rehab, we suggest you plan ahead any pack everything you might need. Even if you are only committing to a short stay in our inpatient detox center, we recommend packing certain items. In order to make the process as simple and straightforward as possible we have created a packing checklist. If you have any additional questions about the process, feel free to reach out to us directly and one of our Treatment Advisors will be happy to help.
What to Pack for Inpatient Detox
Clothing
Pack enough comfortable clothing for roughly one week. The duration of your stay in detox will depend on what kind of substance you were using, the severity of the substance use disorder and the presence of any co-occurring disorders. However, a typical stay in medical detox lasts for between 3 and 7 days.
Hygiene Products
Bring along basic personal hygiene items (toothbrush, shampoo/conditioner, deodorant, toothpaste, etc). We ask that you bring these items to treatment unopened, and avoid bringing products that contain alcohol. Please do not bring any wet wipes or cleaning products of any kind. You can bring a razor, however, it will be held in the staff office and made available for use whenever needed.

Medication
Bring any medications you are currently taking along with any recently written prescriptions. Medications must be in their original prescription bottles/packaging and clearly prescribed to you. Please do not bring any medications in loose bags, pill dispensers, etc. Our medical team will need to approve any medications that are taken during your time in detox. Please note — any and all narcotic medication will be disposed of at the time of admission. Bring along any specialized medical equipment you might need, including inhalers, Glucose Meters, Epipens, etc.
Nicotine Products
Smoking cigarettes is permitted at Princeton Detox & Recovery Center. Vapes can be brought to the facility if they are unopened, disposable vapes in their original packaging. Disposable vapes are available for purchase at the facility. Chewing tobacco, dip and pouches can be used with a resealable container to spit into. Nicotine products are allowed in designated areas outside of group and mealtimes. Nicotine cessation options (gum, patches, etc.) are available through the medical department, and will be handed out if and when appropriate. Princeton Detox & Recovery Center has a zero tolerance policy for misusing nicotine products, and staff will revoke the use of these products if guidelines are not followed. All nicotine products must be brought to the facility unopened and in their original packaging.
Reading Materials
Books and magazines are permitted during your time in detox. We encourage you to bring along a book to read during your downtime. However, leave behind any reading material that glorifies substance use or might be offensive to other clients.
Identification
Bring along your government issued ID (driver’s license, passport, etc) and any current health insurance cards.
Food
Please do not bring any food or drinks to detox. At Princeton Detox & Recovery Center we employ a full-time culinary staff who provide all meals to our clients. Snacks and beverages are always available in the cafeteria in-between meal times. We cater to dietary restrictions and are happy to prepare individual meals based on your personal needs (gluten-free, vegan, dairy-free, Kosher, etc).

Please leave all other electronic devices at home. If you have a concern regarding electronic use, please discuss the specifics with your Treatment Advisor prior to admission.
Bedding
Princeton Detox & Recovery Center provides high quality linens and bedding for each of our clients. Outside pillows, blankets, sheets and stuffed animals are not permitted at our facilities.
